Practical information

Snow removal

Snow and ice removal in Borgarbyggð is managed by the municipality’s Environment and Development Department and the Road Administration.

Further information about the organisation of snow removal can be found on Borgarbyggðar’s website.

Integrated routing system

Borgarbyggð, Association of Municipalities in West Iceland, Borgarfjörður High School and Icelandic Road Administration are running a joint project related to an integrated route system in the municipality. This is a service extension for the residents of the municipality and increases equality for education in the local area.

Students and others who wish to do so have the option of using a school bus to get to elementary school, whether it is the Elementary School in Borgarnes or the Varmalandsdeild and Kleppjárnsreykjadeild, within Borgarfjörður Elementary Schools. The company Strætó runs a route from Kleppjárnsreykja and Varmalandsdeild in Borgarnes with stops at Hvanneyri and Baula. These are morning routes on all weekdays.

Further information about the organisation of snow removal can be found on Borgarbyggð’s website.

Medical services

All general medical services are available at the Health Center of West Iceland, which is located in Borgarnes. At the health centre appointments can be made with a doctor or a practising nurse. Appointment with a doctor or nurse can be done over the phone if the issue is of a nature that allows it to be solved in such a manner.

If matters are urgent, a call will be made the same day from the nurse on duty during the opening hours of the health care, who will  lead the issue into the appropriate course.

A  doctor is on duty 24 hours a day and provides emergency care. Outside of opening hours,  one should always call 1700 unless it’s an emergency, in which case a call  should  be made to 112.

Attention is brought to that it is not possible to receive a visit at the health care centre without previously making an appointment.
